In Memoriam
R.I.P. Walter Cronkite
By David F. Duncan, DrPH, FAAHB
2009/07/17

The most trusted man in America had in retirement been an activist for health care, freedom of speech, and drug policy reform.

Like all of my generation, I am saddened by news of the death at age 92 of Walter Cronkite. Walter and I both spent our childhoods in Kansas City and later lived in Houston and I am proud to have anything in common with this fine man. We also shared our mutual concern with the health and well-being of our fellow senior citizens and our opposition to the War on Drugs. When Walter announced his conclusion that the war in Vietnam could not be won, his words shook the White House and played a key role in turning the tide of public opinion against the disastrous mistake of fighting that war. If only his identical conclusion about the War on Drugs had been as widely heeded!

Walter Cronkite was a giant of journalism and a great American. He will be missed. Bon voyage, Walter.
